Demonstration against I-69!
Noon, June 4th
Meridian and New York streets
Indianapolis
Join us for a festive demonstration against I-69, the NAFTA superhighway, in Indianapolis! I-69 is slated to destroy thousands of acres of family farms, forests, and wetlands in Indiana alone, and is intended to connect to a highway system that will cut through all of the Southern U.S., Mexico, and Central America. This demonstration is part of Roadless Summer, an effort across Indiana to stop this highway. We want to remind people across Indiana that the struggle against I-69 is not over, and that it is still very possible to prevent the construction of this road, particularly with the Department of Transportation's recent budget shortfall. Please join us if you oppose:
*NAFTA, which has meant the loss of at least 31,000 jobs in Indiana alone.
*The Plan Puebla Panama, I-69's sister project in Latin America, which has already been associated with death squad violence and the expansion of sweatshops.
*The involuntary seizure of 5,000 acres of family farmlands.
*The destruction of wide swaths of forest and welands, including habitat of the endangered Indiana Bat.
*The expansion of highway privatization.
*Unrestricted roadbuilding, which only encourages greater dependence on gasoline and the expansion of urban sprawl.
*The Department of Transportations decision to "look to the future" by ignoring the more than 150,000 people in Indiana who have indicated their opposition to I-69 over the past decade.
For these reasons, and more, we hope to see you in Indianapolis this June 4th! Please bring drums, noisemakers, banners, and puppets. We hope to create a festive atmosphere of resistance to I-69.

Note: The bike tour along I-69's route has been rescheduled to begin on June 24th in Indianapolis at 5:30 pm at Illinois and Washington. We apologize for any inconvenience.
